In the realms of music, recognition is everything. And for Ghanaian rapper Amerado, recognition came in a big way at the 2023 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) when he became the first Kumasi based artiste to win the Best Rapper award. The award ceremony, held last on Saturday, is one of the most prestigious events in the country’s music industry.

Amerado won the Best Rapper prize at the 2023 VGMA at the expense of other well-known rappers, including Teephlow, Medikal, Strongman, and Lyrical Joe. His victory was a big victory for Kumasi rap and a testimonial to the artiste talent and diligence.

The award was well-deserved, as Amerado has been consistent in his music delivery, with each release showcasing his growth as an artiste. His “Yeete Nsem” series, which started as a weekly rap news review and covers a range of topics, from politics to social issues, has become a cultural phenomenon in Ghana amassing a huge following for his craft.

Amerado’s success at the VGMA is a triumph for Kumasi rap as well as for him personally. Rappers including Flowking Stone, King Paluta, Strongman, and Phrimpong were all born and raised in Kumasi, a city in Ghana’s Ashanti region. However, the prominence of Accra-based musicians in the Ghanaian music scene frequently casts a shadow over Kumasi rap.

Thanks to Amerado’s victory, Kumasi rap has received the respect it merits, and other rappers from Kumasi can now aim to have a career that is as successful as his. The triumph demonstrates that genius can be found anywhere and that artists shouldn’t be constrained by their geographical location.
